hey whoa

When did Al Gore become engaging? Was he always and I just missed it? This is like in middle school when that dorky weird kid in the corner suddenly started to look kind of good to you, and then all his formerly annoying quirks became cute and crushworthy, and then the next thing you knew you were “going together.” This is not to say that I want to date Al Gore. I’m just fascinated by the fact that all of a sudden I think he’s very interesting to listen to.

  1. Ooh, Sarah Vowell had a great essay about Al Gore in The Partly Cloudy Patriot, about how people didn’t like him because he wasn’t self-depracating about his dorkiness. Now he is, and I think that makes all the difference.

  2. You were in NUM, Lorie! Everyone loves the lovable loser.

I REALLY hope he does not get the Democratic nomination again. REALLY HOPE.

  3. Since Mark Warner announced he was not running, I’ve been vaguely despondent about the Democratic possibilities. We’ll see what we come up with.

Sandy – I think you are totally right.

  4. Did you hear about Jim Webb and Dubya getting into it at some event for new congresspeople? Apparently Dubya asked about Webb’s son and he said he hoped all the soliders got to come home soon, and Dub’s like, that’s not what i asked, how’s your boy? and Webb’s like.. that’s between me and my son…

    Oh snap. Drama in washington.

  5. Wait, let me say i figured jim webb is probably the webb you just elected.

    –the ignorant one

  6. Yeah, Webb is the Webb we just elected.

Mark Warner is the former governor of Virginia – a Democrat who was elected in a Republican state and basically told everyone in the VA Senate and House of Delegates to quit dicking around and make some progress already. And progress was made.

That’s really a gross oversimplification, so let me add another one: Mark Warner is the future hope of America and while he might not be running in ’08, I don’t think we’re done with him by a long shot. I hope we aren’t.

  7. I liked Al Gore a long, long time ago. Like back in 1988, when he briefly ran in the primary and lost out to Dukakis.

But defeat energized him, no question — the man I see out there now would have found a way to get those extra votes in Florida.
