I Stole A Meme From Beth Phares

Even though my life is currently insanely busy, it’s not busy with anything worth writing about. I thought about writing about how I am evidently not biomechanically cut out to be a runner, even though I really want to be a runner (thanks for the flat feet, Grandpa!). I thought about writing about how Jonathan steered me away from the brink of hair suicide last week, and also about how he is now swiping styling techniques from Jonathan Anton on “Blow Out,” who is his idol and his inspiration. I thought about writing about other things. All of these things are boring.

So instead, I decided to steal a meme from MySpace and post it here. This could be because I’m really lame, but I get away with it because I stole this particular meme from the amazing Beth Phares, who is the absolute coolest person I have ever actually known in real life. If you all knew Beth, you would feel cooler and more special for knowing her. And if Beth is not too cool for a meme, then dammit, neither am I.

And now, when cool people Google Beth Phares, which I’m sure happens all the time, then they will find this site. Maybe I am using Beth’s coolness to increase site traffic! Or maybe not. In any case, here’s a meme.

What do you dip a chicken nugget in?
Usually barbecue sauce, but sometimes honey. Sweet & sour if at McDonald’s, but not anywhere else.

What is your favorite type of food/cuisine?
Thai, but I’m also big on Mexican food, and I’m especially fond of Mexican booze.

Were you in sports in high school?
Yep, I played volleyball and soccer. I was not the worst volleyball player in the world, but I was almost certainly the worst soccer player in the world. When standing still, I could kick the ball the length of the field, and I did a bitchin’ throw-in. All the other stuff was entirely beyond me.

Were you a boy/girl scout?
I was a Girl Scout for a few years and the top cookie seller in my troop each year, because I was very interested in being the best at everything back then. I quit, I think, because there was some drama with a troop leader’s daughter, but I’m not positive about that.

Would you ever strip or pose nude in a magazine?
I’m thinking no.

When was the last time you wrote a letter to someone on paper?
Last week, I wrote a very scribbly and bad note to my sister when I mailed her something.

Can you change the oil on a car?
I could probably learn how, but that’s one of those things I’m perfectly willing to pay someone else to do. I can check my oil, though – does that count? I know a lot of women who can’t.

Ever gotten a speeding ticket?
No. I really don’t speed very often.

Ran out of gas?
No, but one time I thought I was going to, and I was in Western Illinois a.k.a. Nowhereland, and this was before everyone had cell phones, and I was sure I was going to have to walk to someone’s farm and ask for help. Luckily I found my way back to the interstate, where the very next exit had a gas station.

Best thing for breakfast?
I go through phases. Right now I’m in a cereal phase.

What is your usual bedtime?
I’ve been trying to get in bed by 10:30 most weeknights. When I do, I’m an infinitely happier and more pleasant person the next day.

Are you lazy?
Well, yeah, sometimes.

Do you read the newspaper?
No, and the reason why is really dumb. It’s because I hate getting newspaper ink on my hands. So instead I get my news from the internet or TV.

How many languages do you know?
I’m only fluent in English, but I can read, write, and comprehend Spanish fairly well, and I’ve studied enough French films that I have picked up a bit of that language too.

Do you have any magazine subscriptions?
Real Simple, SELF, Glamour, and Rachael Ray Everyday. I am kind of a magazine slut lately.

Which are better, Legos or Lincoln Logs?
Um…Legos, I guess. Both have their advantages.

Red wine or white wine?
Usually white. Most red wines give me a fierce headache; I think I’m tannin-sensitive.

Favorite season?
I’m with Beth – FALL. Football and pumpkins and leaves and good smells and crisp weather. It’s the best.

Have you ever wanted to be a teacher?
I’ve thought about it. I actually applied and interviewed for Teach for America in college. It’s probably a good thing I didn’t get it, because I’m impatient and I curse too much and I suck at politics, and my teacher friends tell me these would all be bad things in a school environment.

Are you stubborn?
Sometimes, yes. Usually for stupid reasons.

Favorite TV channels?
It’s kind of dumb how much I spend on digital cable, because aside from the network channels I really only watch a few cable channels, and usually only for one show each. So I watch HBO for The Sopranos, Comedy Central for The Colbert Report and sometimes for The Daily Show, Cartoon Network for Robot Chicken, and VH1 Classic because it rocks.

Who is better…Leno or Letterman?
Conan, even though I’m rarely awake for him these days. I should TiVo him.

Afraid of heights?
Yes, very much so.

Sing in the car?
Always. I’m really uncomfortable riding in a car with people I don’t know well, because then we might have to talk or listen to NPR instead of singing along to whatever’s playing.

Ever used a gun?
No, and I hope I never will.

Are musicals cheesy?
Very, although Ginny might argue otherwise. I still like them, though.

Do you believe in ghosts?
Sort of, sometimes.

Are you superstitious?
Yes, even though I know it’s silly and doesn’t make much sense.

Take a vitamin daily?
Yep. And sometimes Vitamin Water too.

Wear a bath robe?
Between showering and getting dressed. It’s blue and it’s probably two sizes too big and it’s falling apart, but I love it.

What do you wear to bed?
Panties and a tee 90% of the time.

First concert?
I think it was country music has-been Dan Seals. Shut up shut up shut up. We are going to meet him in Montana, where we will then bop the night away.

Favorite genre of music?
Ooh. I couldn’t possibly narrow it down. Rock & pop, I guess.

Any tattoos?
Nope. I’m too poor, too fickle, and too pain-averse.

Wal-Mart, Target or K-Mart?
Target, of course.

Nike or Adidas?
Saucony, currently.

Fritos or Cheetos?
Cheetos. One time Sammi said Fritos smelled like cows and I’ve barely been able to eat them since.

Ever heard of “gorp?”
Isn’t that some kind of trail mix type thing?

Ever heard of spuba?
No, but it sounds dirty and I’m going to Google it the minute I finish this.

Ever take dance lessons?
Not officially, but I’ve had fourteen years of colorguard, which often incorporates dance. I can do a passable pas de chat and a pseudo releve and a sort of chasse and a few other things. Does that count?

Is there a profession that you picture your perfect future spouse having?
Not really.

Can you curl your tongue?
Yep.

Ever won a spelling bee?
Yes, many. I was once almost the kind of spelling bee girl that people make movies about now.

Own any record albums?
On vinyl? No. CDs? Hundreds.

Own a record player?
I used to, but not anymore. It’s in my parents’ shed, so I guess you could say I still own it, but it doesn’t live at my house.

Regularly burn incense?
Never.

Tea or coffee?
I like iced tea. Every once in a great while I’ll have hot tea or a coffee drink of some kind.

Favorite kind of cookie?
Any soft and chewy cookie without nuts.

Can you swim well?
Like Beth, “well enough to not die. I’d say that’s fine.”

Can you hold your breath w/o manually holding your nose?
Yes, but not underwater.

Ever had braces or a mouth piece?
Nope. I probably should have a bite guard or whatever these days, though, since I grind my teeth in my sleep and occasionally bite the insides of my cheeks. Ow.

Are you artistic?
I’d say yes, even if I’m not making a lot of art these days.

Are you patient?
I am sometimes more patient than I give myself credit for, and sometimes less so.

Ever won a contest?
A few, but the best one was the giant Christmas stocking full of toys when I was six or so. I drew the best Santa Claus.

  1. I don’t think I’ve ever denied that most musicals are cheesy, but that doesn’t make me love them any less. (except Wicked-it’s high class :) ) You’re cheesy and I still love you!

  2. Are you kidding me? Wicked is probably THE CHEESIEST MUSICAL EVER (says the girl who is listening to “defying gravity” this very second.)

    Oh and…

Didn’t you forget “old lello car?”

  3. oh man, i am SO WITH YOU on the mickeyd’s sweet and sour. seriously.

with you on autumn too (though i love the word autumn so much more than “fall.” if i had a daughter, autumn would be on the short list of names).

any chance you might want to trek up to NYC when i am up there? it’d be great to see you, but i’m thinking that the DC leg of the trip has gotten cut.

  4. You rarely speed?? Whoa. You’re the first person I’ve ever ‘known’ to not do so. What’s it like going the speed limit everywhere?

  5. Now, hold on, Heather B (from the first season of The Real World on MTV?). There are many of us who rarely speed…we just don’t talk about it much (understandably: Why absorb the ridicule?) and, well, you never get a good look at us as you blow by.

Confession: I hadn’t a clue what a “meme” was. I’ve certainly read many, especially in MySpace. I just never knew they were memes. Like that: Knowledge.

  6. I drive usually between the exact speed limit and 5 over at all times. The view is nice and I get better gas mileage. :)

  7. Ooh – also, cK, one of the hallmarks of a true meme is a question at the end where you try to shame a bunch of people into doing the meme by “tagging” them. It’s sort of like the chain letters where your mother’s cousin’s pet goat will accidentally eat antifreeze and die if you don’t forward the letter to your 50 closest friends.

Usually, when I do a meme, I strip that question because it annoys me. This one didn’t have one, so I suspect that someone cool before me probably stripped it.

  8. also, when i drive i am always under the speed limit.

    cuz i bike!

    *canned laughter*

but when i did drive, it was at the most 5 over, unless i was ona road trip, during which i might push it to 8 over.

why? fear. seriously. one of my favorite bands has a song called “cancer or car wreck?” and i t talks about how those are the two ways most people go.

  9. what’s it like going the speed limit everywhere? it’s safe. Stop speeding heather! :)
