Four On The Floor

When I decided to do this post, I thought immediately that I’d use “four on the floor” at the post title, but then all of a sudden I got paranoid and worried that it was some kind of dirty slang that I didn’t understand, so I Googled it, and it seemed safe, so it’s the post title. And if it’s also a euphemism for dirty gang sex or something, I’m sorry. I tried.

Anyway, I think I was tagged for this at least once before and forgot to follow up on it, but in any case, Erin posted hers today and I thought I’d follow suit.

Four jobs I’ve had in my life:

  • Burger King drive-thru/cashier girl
  • Library assistant
  • “Clerical assistant” (aka Girl Who Files Papers All The Time Every Day)
  • Telephone fundraiser (like telemarketing, but not)

Four movies I can watch over and over:

  • High Fidelity
  • Don’t Tell Mom The Babysitter’s Dead
  • Clueless
  • Empire Records

Four places I have lived:

  • Lynchburg, Virginia
  • Evanston, Illinois
  • Windsor, Colorado
  • Ceiba, Puerto Rico

Four TV shows I love to watch:

  • The Office (US)
  • Without a Trace
  • Lost
  • American Idol

Four places I’ve been on vacation:

  • New Orleans (Spring 2005)
  • Myrtle Beach (Summer 1997)
  • Disney World (Summer 1992)
  • Disneyland (Summer 1986, I think)

Four (non-blog) websites I visit daily:

  • Bank of America
  • Television Without Pity
  • Google
  • Myspace

Four of my favorite foods:

  • Pad Thai with chicken or shrimp
  • Spanish rice (my mother’s recipe)
  • Quesadillas texanas at my favorite Mexican restaurant
  • Chicken paprikas (a new favorite)

Four places I would rather be right now:

    • Somewhere really warm with a swimming pool
    • Chicago
    • At the movies
    • In bed

The last thing was about tagging people, but I won’t do it and you can’t make me. But feel free to do it if you want to.

    1. ‘Four on the Floor” is something the breeder told us when we got our yellow lab, so to me it means that I’m not supposed to let Maggie sit on the couch unless she can do it while all four paws are touching the floor!

    2. “Four on the Floor” sounds like one of those games you play in elementary school when you have a sub and the movie* is over.

My roommate is a third grade teacher, and the other day I asked her what the point of “Heads Up 7-Up” was (meaning, what’s the object? How do you win?) and she answered, “It’s just some dumb thing they tell us to do when we run out of ideas or the kids are getting bitchy.” Heh.

      * In all the schools I’ve ever been to, that movie was always, always ‘Stand and Deliver.’ WTF?

    3. “Four on the floor” 1-2-3-4, 1-2-3-4 – BUM BUM BUM BUM

I’ve always associated with dance (techno) music that’s like what everybody associates with dance music. Beat-heavy driving rhythmic techno: BUM BUM BUM BUM

    4. hell yeah high fidelity. one of the rare times when the movie is better than the book, eh? they nail the chicago emo and pnk kids RIGHT ON THE HEAD.

    5. I don’t know if the movie is better than the book, jim — I love Nick Hornsby because NO ONE writes contemporary thirtyish men (a group in which I have a compellling degree of interest) as well as he does… but the film rocks.

    6. Actually, I own every single book Hornby’s written, so I don’t know if I’d say the movie was better than the book either. I love them both equally, for different reasons.

    7. i adore nick hornby, too–about a bot would be my favorite book, except for the fact that american gods by neil gaiman is.

personally, i thought the movie was better simply because i like the setting (“now”-ish, and chicago) and the record store workers better. it’s easier for me to like, because it reminds me of people i knew so much more than the book did.

i also saw the movie first, so maybe that’s why. but i just think that jack black and other dude were awesome, and the corresponding characters in the boosk didn’t do it for me as much. and details like the chicago punk thief’s spotted hair–which was RIGHT ON THE MONEY for that time period–push the movie over the top.

it’s why i own the movie and often reread about a boy, but haven’t really read high fidelity again. maybe i should. :-)

and lorie, i like that you often take the “I love them both equally, for different reasons” approach.

    8. oh, and i STILL need to read fever pitch.

and get songbook, if i could find a copy of the version that also had the CD. so much cooler than the paperback.

    9. The point of head’s up 7 up is to make unpopular kids in the class feel like asses for never EVER getting picked..even when it was your birthday.

    10. A few weeks ago my grandma was talking about when she learned to drive a stick shift and she said something about “four on the floor.” My sister and I had no idea what she was talking about.

    11. Yeah, that’s right. Did you ever ride around in an old truck with your dad or grandpa and a second person, and since you were the little kid you had to sit in the middle, and there was this big old gigantic ass shifter pole he was always hitting you in the knees with? That’s four on the floor.
