Possessed iPod FRT and Introduction to the Rumspringa Tourist

I have my iPod with me today and it has twice as many songs on it as the iTunes on this computer does, so I decided to use it for this week’s FRT. I just want you to know that I just realized I have 666 songs on the iPod. Maybe I should get those little rhinestone doohickies and put devil horns on it.

1. “El Caminos In The West” – Grandaddy
2. “Caring Is Creepy” – The Shins
3. “Firecracker” – Ryan Adams
4. “What If” – Coldplay
5. “Africa” – Toto
6. “I Will Follow” – U2
7. “Blue Diamonds” – The Long Winters
8. “Airbag” – Radiohead
9. “Stay (Faraway, So Close!)” – U2
10. “Get Gone” – Fiona Apple

Girly whining alert: I am about to start my period any day now, and I’m ridiculously uncomfortable. My suit pants feel too tight and ugh. I’m bloated and achy and crampy and I wish it would just hurry up and start already so my body can settle down and, ideally, so that it will be almost done by the time I leave for Vegas on Wednesday.

So, yeah, I’m going to Vegas on Wednesday. I’m not nearly as excited about it as everyone seems to expect – it’s like, you say you’re going to Vegas and all your coworkers and friends are like “you suck!” but seriously. I am going on business, first of all, and I don’t know anyone else who will be there, and I’m not a huge partier or a huge gambler and I don’t have a ton of money. So I’m really not envisioning it as this out-of-control five days of partying where I’m going to come back and find out that I accidentally got drunk and married someone or gambled away my underwear or something. If you have any tips on interesting, not-hellaciously-expensive, traveling-alone-friendly things to do while I’m there, I’d love to hear them.

Oh, and here’s the part where you’re all going to think I’m a total alien who has never traveled before. See, I’m going to this training seminar, and it’s “business casual” and I’m wondering if I can get away with jeans. Not, like, torn up and run over by a car jeans, but, you know, just normal jeans. I totally recognize that I sound like I’ve been raised by Amish wolves or something here, but seriously, I have not traveled to the West Coast since I was like 6, and I feel like I’ve heard that conferences in Vegas are a bit more casual than conferences elsewhere. If I were going to an East Coast business casual thing, I would be packing black dress pants and button-downs or whatever. Do I need to go buy a bunch of khakis? Are you all laughing at me now?

I feel like a tool even writing this.

  1. Go see Celine Dion’s show! Or something…. :)

Um i say do Khaki’s the first day and see what everyone else is wearing…

  2. Ginny is onto something — I agree, wear khakis the first day to see what everyone else is wearing, but just in case pack the jeans AND the dressy black pants.

I don’t know if it’s still there or not, but at Ceasar’s Palace there was the most awesomest IMAX ride (RIDE!!!!) called Poseidon’s Adventure. If it’s still there, I highly recommend that.

If memory serves correctly there’s also a mini-zoo at the Mirage (Actually, I dunno if it’s still there for sure, since they had the white tigers and it was part of Zeigfried & Roy’s thing and what-not); but you can definitely look at sharks and other aquatic life at the Mandalay Bay.

One other thing that I’ve always wanted to do but never have done is to see the art that’s on display in the Bellagio. But that might be out of the question since all I know about the Bellagio is that it’s damn expensive to stay there.

What else…A Cirque de Soleil show maybe? OH WAIT!! NO – Blue Man Group. You must see Blue Man Group.

  3. Blue Diamonds! Is that due to the mix i sent you? also, yay grandaddy! Did you hear that they broke up? sad.

  4. I think jeans are alright. Like nice stylish chic jeans even with a cool blazer or something, but yeah, totally work the jeans. Also? Go see some shows, although I have a feeling that they might fall under the crazy expensive category. But seriously, I have heard that all of the shows are awesome, so even just pick one and go see it. That’s fun, even though you don’t gamble or party where else can you see the Eiffel Tower and take a ride on the gondolas in the canal… besides you know, in Paris or Venis? Haha. Enjoy!

  5. I don’t know what the weather is like in Vegas now, but if it’s warm and sunny, you can sit out by the pool. A lot of the hotels their have amazing pools. I agree with the mini zoo thing and the aquarium that amy suggested, those are fun. Don’t bother going into the M&M store, if you happen to see it. It sucks ass.

p.s. I love your new design and “amish wolves” made me laugh out loud.

  6. What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. Lucky for you, that even applies if you do things that are incredibly dull and boring. When people ask you what you did while you were there, just wink and repeat the slogan.

  7. no jeans. that’s not business casual. it’s always better in work sitches to be overdressed rather than underdressed. sorry i’m late to the game on this one.

of course, bring jeans and if it seems like that’s okay, great. but, business casual does not include jeans.

    have fun!

  8. i thin it is close to joshua tree national park. close enough to rent a car to head out there, perhaps?

it would feed the memorable places as well as the u2 part of you!

  9. ” I don’t know anyone else who will be there”

Then don’t give what you wear a second thought, unless you are going to try to network for a new job.
