Ice Ice Baby

Because it’s finals week, the College did not close or even delay opening today, despite the fact that it was snowing and icing this morning, and the ice was expected to continue throughout the day. Pretty much every other school in the area is closed, as are many businesses that normally don’t close due to inclement weather. The ice storm they’ve predicted is that bad. Since I now live five minutes from the office, I feel guilty staying home even when I’m uncomfortable driving in the bad weather because half of my coworkers have to drive by my house on their way in, and if they can make it, so can I (theoretically). I was also afraid that if I wore jeans and my Saucony trail runners (gray and not flashy, but sneakers nonetheless) to work, that everyone else would be dressed professionally and I’d feel like an idiot.

So of course, after I oh-so-reluctantly dragged my ass out of bed and put on gray flannel dress pants (the warmest ones I own) and the same black sweater I wore two days ago, and went out and scraped off the car and drove very, very slowly and carefully to work, I arrived at the office to discover the following:

a) Of the thirteen other people in my department, only three had bothered to come in, and
b) The three who were there were all wearing jeans or corduroys and sneakers or boots.

Luckily, the four of us decided as a group that sitting at work today was bullshit, and I turned around and headed back home less than an hour after I got there. AND in that short time period, enough ice accumulated on my car that I had to scrape the damn thing again before I could leave. Since then I’ve been warm and toasty at home, curled up on the couch in my awesome cozy sweatpants, with my red down blanket and my kittens all wrapped around me and almost a full day of court shows on FOX to keep me company. And cocoa. I have cocoa.

Seriously, did you know that in our area, you can watch court shows on FOX from 11 in the morning until 4 in the afternoon? That kicks ass. AND The People’s Court is on twice during that time period.

Today is awesome because I don’t have to go anywhere, and I have groceries so I’m good on that, and I don’t have to shovel my walk because I live in a place where they do that for us. I just hope we don’t lose power, because that would suck. And with as much ice as we’re getting today, it’s a distinct possibility. So let’s just hope the power stays on, or else I’m going to be all non-ironically quoting Arcade Fire lyrics up in this place.

Which reminds me – I’ve lost my copy of Funeral, and I’m really annoyed about it because not only do I want to listen to it, but I wanted to put a couple of songs from it on a mix. And I can’t find it. I think it’s in the car somewhere.

I think I’m going to take a nap.

  1. Ice days rock. Glad you made to work and back home safely. Enjoy the rest of your day with your precious kittykats.

  2. We got nice powdery snow this morning, but I still had to go to my 10:30 exam… which I got a 96 on… and then they closed the school at 12:30… and now it’s icing…. which means lots of people have to stay later and take their today exams tomorrow… but not me!

  3. Oh and also… when I was watching Ice Wars: Battle of the Sexes the other day… I decided it would totally kick ass if Brian Boitano skated to “What Would Brian Boitano Do?”… cause he’s all kinds of old and could totally get away with it. It would bring the skating world to their knees!
